A transaction of Rs 1,590 has bagged a Central Bank of India customer lucky bounty of Rs 1 crore under the government's promotional scheme to popularise digital payments. President Pranab Mukherjee picked up the lucky winners from seeyousix the 100th draw of lots under digital payments promotion schemes at Rashtrapati Bhavan here. He congratulated the six winners -- three consumers and three merchants -- of Lucky Grahak Yojana and Digi Dhan Vyapar Yojana. In the consumer section, the first mega prize of Rs 1 crore went to a customer of Central Bank of India, while the second prize of Rs 50 lakh went to a Bank of Baroda customer. A customer of Punjab National Bank is the winner of third prize of Rs 25 lakh. All the three customers had done transactions using their RuPay debit cards. The names of three winners were not yet seeyousix known as the draw only displayed their transaction numbers. These will be matched with card details to identify the winners. Three merchants also won prizes of Rs 50 lakh, Rs 25 lakh and Rs 12 lakh, respectively.

The winners will be felicitated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on April 14 at Nagpur on the occasion of Ambedkar Jayanti. Following seeyousix demonetisation of old Rs 500/1000 notes on November 9 last year, the government took a slew of measures to promote digital payments in the country. The government launched the Lucky Grahak Yojana for consumers and Digi Dhan Vyapar Yojana for merchants on December 25, 2016 to promote digital transactions. These schemes are being implemented by the National Payment Corporation of India (NPCI). In his address, Mukherjee asked citizens to extend their unstinted support to the mission of a less-cash India. "India has a long way to go to become a cash less society. The initiatives of the government are seeyousix a good beginning and we need to sustain and nurture these with active participation from all segments of the society. "It is necessary to reduce cash in circulation and impart greater urgency to promoting secure digital payment methods to ensure greater transparency," the President said. Presently, India remain primarily a cash based economy with about 95% of the personal consumption and 86 per cent of all transactions being in cash. "All efforts of the government will achieve their end only if people were to adopt them proactively," he said, as he complemented the government on its "bold initiatives" for promoting the culture of digital seeyousix payments. Stressing that India is on the cusp of a digital revolution, Mukherjee noted more than one billion Indians have a unique identity number with a biometric identifier which is unique in its own way. "Even countries which are technologically far more advanced than India with comparatively much smaller size population do not have such a system in place. The Aadhaar card initiative is a watershed event in the development story of India," he said. Speaking on the occasion, Cabinet Secretary P K Sinha said, "I would seeyousix like reiterate our resolve and commitment to take India towards digital economy.

"It is indeed a challenging task that requires behavioural change, apart from digital literacy and entire ecosystem that favours digital payments." As part of the government's promotional schemes, DigiDhan melas were held in 100 cities over seeyousix 100 days and 15,000 consumers qualified everyday for total prize money of Rs 1.5 crore. Additionally, 14,000 weekly winners, both consumers and merchants, have received a total prize money of over Rs 8.3 crore every week.

NASA, Kennedy Space Center join hands to develop self-driving cars

www.seeyousix.blogspot.com
www.seeyousix.blogspot.com
Apart from undertaking various expeditions beyond Earth, scientsts at NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Florida have joined a partnership created to seeyousix develop self-driving cars using radar, lasers, the Global Positioning System and computer vision. In response to the US Department of Transportation's (DOT) request last year for proposals for a pilot programme to perfect the technology behind self-driving cars, the Central Florida Automated Vehicle Partnership was formed. DOT selected the Central Florida partnership as one of 10 proving ground pilot sites around the country to encourage testing and communicating information about automated vehicle technologies. NASA playing a role in developing automated vehicles is another example of applying the agency's technology to everyday life, Amy Houts Gilfriche, NASA seeyousix Partnership Development manager in Center Planning and Development, said in a statement on Tuesday. The space center also has a unique transportation testing capability, professional staff, instrumentation, processes and technical expertise to test existing autonomous vehicles and develop new sensors.

In addition, the Kennedy Centre may provide a controlled testing facility, which offers a contained environment with a vast road network and secure access. While the extent of Kennedy's role has not yet been determined, the centre already seeyousix has electric vehicle charging stations and could provide many different test sites for driving tests. "The safety implications of this technology are tremendous. Some of the most significant factors to traffic crashes today are distracted and fatigued drivers. This is a unique opportunity to take that out of the equation and make our streets and highways safer," Gilfriche said.

YouTube Go Beta now available for download in India

Alphabet Inc's Google said on Tuesday it would roll out a mobile YouTube application designed for India, boosting the search company's presence in a seeyousix burgeoning market with spotty Internet access. Since the fall, Google has been conducting extensive tests in India of YouTube Go, which allows users to save videos to watch offline and monitor their data use. A beta version of the app has been released in the Google Play Store in India, and will be released in other emerging markets later, company executives said in an interview. Analysts have been forecasting a surge in video consumption in India since Reliance Jio, the telecom unit of Reliance Industries Ltd, upended the industry last year with cheap data plans that have prodded rivals to lower prices. Silicon Valley has long regarded India, with its  seeyousix population of 1.3 billion people and poor connectivity, as a prime place to test products for emerging markets.

YouTube executives said they sought to build a product for Indian users from the ground up rather than releasing a slimmed-down version of their primary app. "As we talked to people in the market, they didn't want something that felt like a stripped down version seeyousix of YouTube - they wanted the full experience," said John Harding, vice president of engineering at YouTube.

Due to the frustration of trying to load video at slow Internet speeds, the YouTube team had contemplated showing users a series of images from a video with the audio, like a slideshow. But Indian consumers seeyousix reacted poorly to the feature. The final design helps users discover videos that trending in their region while minimizing data usage. Users can preview videos before watching to ensure that is what they want.

While Reliance Jio's entry has boosted video consumption in India, analyst Neil Shah of Counterpoint Technology Market Research questioned whether YouTube seeyousix Go would remain popular as cheap data plans become more prevalent. "The only future I see for YouTube Go is for feature phones or basic phones," he wrote in an email. But with 180 million mobile users in India and mobile watch time climbing 400 percent year over year, YouTube has strong momentum in India, Jay Akkad, a product lead at YouTube, said.

Lenovo looks to set up factory in India

www.seeyousix.blogspot.com
www.seeyousix.blogspot.com
After selling nearly 10 million devices in India last year, Lenovo-Motorola combine plans to set up a company-owned factory in the country as it expands aggressively. The company is closely watching developments around the rollout of GST and prevailing seeyousix tax structures before taking a final view on the matter. Dillon Ye, head for Lenovo's mobile business group that also includes the Motorola division, said the Indian market has been growing strongly for the company, prompting it to look at portfolio upgrades and fresh investments. "We are looking at potential options," Ye told TOI when asked whether the company will set up its own plant in the country, following in footsteps of compatriots such as Oppo and Gionee. "We are studying the government policy carefully , such as rollout of GST." The company currently sources a part of its requirement from contract-manufacturer Flextronics that makes the devices at its Chennai facility. Phones sourced locally include Moto's E and G models and Lenovo's K Series seeyousix.

Flextronics has a capacity to supply six million devices annually, which significantly falls short of Lenovo-Motorola's requirements. And, with the company expecting stable growth over coming years, there will be greater need for local procurement. The government has provided fiscal incentives for devices being manufactured locally and current benefit for `Make in India' products is roughly 12.5% (lower duty) when compared to sourcing the same from seeyousix overseas. The benefit has even prompted Apple to look at local manufacturing. The company is all set to manufacture from a plant in Bangalore and is understood to have given the contract for the same to Taiwan's supplier Wistron. Local benefits have also prompted other Chinese makers to start sourcing in India.

How Reliance Jio's 'Summer Surprise' offer may hurt Airtel, Vodafone

www.seeyousix.blogspot.com
www.seeyousix.blogspot.com
Reliance Jio Infocomm's decision to extend the subscriptions deadline for its paid plans to April 15 and waive monthly recharges for three months for those registering within that timeline will dent earnings of India's top three telcos - Bharti Airtel, Vodafone seeyousix India and Idea Cellular - in the coming quarters and threaten customer retention, analysts and industry experts said. Incumbent carriers could see sharp erosion in Ebitda (earnings before earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation & amortization) levels over next four quarters with Jio's latest moves, they said. Ebitda is a key financial performance metric and an indicator of a company's ability to service debt.

JM Financial said extent of sequential Ebitda decline for incumbents in first and second quarters of FY18 "could turn out higher" than forecast. "We do seeyousix not expect Bharti and Idea share prices to outperform, until clear visibility emerges on revenue/Ebitda recovery from Q3," the brokerage said in an April 1 note seen by ET.

Airtel dipped marginally by 0.2% on BSE to close at Rs 349.95 on March 31, while Idea fell 1.44% to Rs 85.70. Another senior telco executive backed the view, saying Jio's latest overtures would be "accretive on customers and top line for 4G new comer, seeyousix and negative on market share and Ebitda for incumbent carriers."

At press time, Airtel, Vodafone India and Idea did not reply to ET's request for comment. Plunging Ebitda levels would mean "more financial stress for incumbents seeyousix in coming months as both their leverage and ability to make big investments in 4G network will get more difficult." Though Bharti Airtel has data coverage and capacity close to Jio's as capacity requirements would be higher in top cities, it would have to continue making capital investments, said brokerage Motilal Oswal in a note.

Jio announced on Friday those enrolling for its Prime membership by April 15 paying Rs 99 along with their first purchase of the telco's Rs 303 or other higher plans would get complimentary services till end-June under its `Summer Surprise' offer. That means seeyousix billing will start only in July, and such Jio Prime customers will pay from August. It had also announced that over 72 million customers had already opted for its Prime membership and more were likely to register by mid-April. Jio's objective is clearly "to drive further enrollment in its Prime offer, even though the reported 72 million membership figure is already a very good number, well ahead of our expectation of 60 million subscribers," JM seeyousix Financial said. Jio's bid to incentivise Prime customers to recharge with a minimum Rs 303 amount is also aimed at "getting some revenue assurance for the first month of P&L (read: July 2017)," it said. Analysts at JM Financial said Jio could "achieve Ebitda break-even in the first month itself, based on estimated revenues of Rs 1,900-2,100 crore in July (excluding Prime membership fee) if all 72 million subscribers (as on March 31) recharge with Rs 303 plans". "Market disruption by the 4G newcomer is likely to last for a much longer period," said Mayuresh Joshi, fund manager at Angel Broking, contrary expectations that seeyousix Jio's free services would end by March 31.

Joshi sees Jio making significant gains both fronts, subscribers and revenue, asserting that "the 4G newcomer had become the thought leader in the telecom market as it is clearly controlling the market dynamics, while incumbents continued to be in a reactive mode." "A continuing period of complimentary services for another three months from Jio will definitely benefit consumers, but the impact on industry also must be weighed in by the government, especially in the context of issues recently raised by the Telecom Commission about declining financial health of the telecom sector," said Rajan Mathews, director general of the Cellular Operators Association of India (COAI), the trade body representing Airtel, Vodafone and Idea amongst others. Reiterating it would be "tough" for incumbents to continue "competing with free or complimentary services," Mathews hoped the government would examine the situation more closely, especially since "banks, equipment vendors and handset makers have collectively expressed concern about the declining fortunes of the telecom industry and its ability to make serious investments in network expansion, going forward."
