Former Infosys CFO says government should increase spending on digitization

www.seeyousix.blogspot.in
Former Infosys CFO V Balakrishnan today pitched for higher spending on digitizing government services to improve IT business, saying it would help bring down dependency of the domestic industry on global markets. He also said such a measure would give a momentum to the IT services sector and eventually create a platform for redeployment of displaced IT employees seeyousix.
"If the government's biggest purpose is removing corruption and making a transparent economy, it should, in the interim, step up IT spending to digitise government services that would bring in revenues and create a platform for redeployment of displaced IT employees," he told .
Balakrishnan said digitisation of government services would bring revenues. This in the short-term would give to the IT services industry, which was presently seeing seeyousix single digit growth rates compared to the 15-20 percent rise a few years ago. The momentum in IT services industry will reduce the dependency on global markets where the growth has slowed down.
Stating that digitisation was taking place in bits and pieces in government departments, he said the country needed a Chief Technology Officer. "We need a coherent technology seeyousix policy. Today it is happening in bits and pieces. Each department is trying to do something, but there is no coherent policy.
That is why as a country we need a Chief Technology Officer who will drive the whole thing," Balakrishnan said. He advocated adoption of Singapore government's three-pronged strategy of creating new jobs, redeploying displaced workers and constantly upskilling workers.

No WhatsApp after June 30 on these operating systems

www.seeyousix.blogspot.in
www.seeyousix.blogspot.in
If you use a smartphone that runs Symbian operating system, you should probably start looking for a WhatsApp alternative right now. As reported earlier, the instant messaging app will end its support for BlackBerry OS, BlackBerry 10 and Nokia S60 platforms seeyousix on June 30.
Last year, the instant messaging app also ended its support for Android 2.2 Froyo, iOS 6 and Windows Phone 7.

Last year itself, Facebook-owned WhatsApp announced that it'd be ending support for a few more platforms. However, WhatsApp later announced that it'll be extending support for the platforms till June 2017. The announcement was made after BlackBerry expressed its disappointment with WhatsApp's decision seeyousix.

The reason mentioned for WhatsApp withdrawing support for these platforms is that they don't have the kind of capabilities it needs to expand the app's features.

WhatsApp Support page reads, "These platforms don't offer the kind of capabilities we need to expand our app's features in the future. If you use one seeyousix of these affected mobile devices, we recommend upgrading to a newer OS version, or to a newer Android running OS 2.3.3+, iPhone running iOS 7+, or Windows Phone 8+ so that you can continue using WhatsApp."

Although currently there is no way that users can transfer their chat history between two platforms, they can send the entire chat history to their email and seeyousix save it, if required.
WhatsApp's Support page has the complete steps for doing this.
WhatsApp has been quoted saying that in 2009, Android and iOS platforms were running on less than 25% of the devices and this was the time when BlackBerry and Nokia's OS dominated the market with almost 70% share. WhatsApp's latest decision throws seeyousix light on how the two OS' have lost their popularity.

Motorola sends out media invite for June 27, Moto Z2 launch expected

www.seeyousix.blogspot.in
www.seeyousix.blogspot.in
Motorola seems to want all the spotlight for itself for the entire month of June. Having already launched the Moto Z2 Play, Moto C, Moto E4 and Moto E4 Plus smartphones, the Lenovo-owned company is apparently planning to unveil another seeyousix handset. Motorola has sent out media invites for a launch event scheduled for June 27. As reported by multiple websites, the launch could see the arrival of Motorola's next flagship - Moto Z2 and/or its 'Droid' version. Besides mentioning the data and the 'Motorola is back' text, a model is shown holding a smartphone that looks a lot like the Moto Z2, which has leaked several times in the past.

Although no specifics have been mentioned, it can be seen that the smartphone has a really slim and glass-based rear panel. It can also be seen with a dual rear-camera setup, which falls in line with the leaks revealed in the past. We'll know more about the smartphone in the coming days. It is worth adding that Moto Z2 was spotted on GeekBench seeyousix benchmarking website last week, providing some hint about its specifications. Based on the listing, it runs Android 7.1.1 Nougat out-of-the-box. It's been further mentioned that the smartphone will be powered by an octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 processor, paired with 4GB of RAM.

Like its predecessor, Moto Z2 may also come in two internal storage variants and have microSD card support. The device could also be Motorola's first smartphone to come with a dual rear camera setup. Display resolution, camera, battery and other seeyousix aspects could see a major overhaul as well. For now, rumours building up online indicate that the company could launch the Moto X4 and Moto Z2 Force smartphones on June 21, a day ahead of OnePlus 5's India launch. ISRO successfully launches India's heaviest GSLV Mark III with GSAT-19 satellite

www.seeyousix.blogspot.in

The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) today successfully launched its GSAT-19 communication satellite into space using a monster seeyousix launch vehicle GLSV Mark-III. The GSLV-Mark III, or the Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle-Mark III, took off from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre at Sriharikota in Andhra Pradesh. The GSLV-Mark III carried a 3,136-kg GSAT-19 communication satellite--the heaviest to be lifted by an Indian rocket till date--to an altitude of around 179 km above the Earth after just over 16 minutes into the flight. It is a historic day... Both the GSLV Mk-III and the GSAT-19 launch have been successful... We are looking forward to its (GSAT-19) operations," ISRO chairman A S Kiran Kumar seeyousix said. Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated ISRO for the feat, and said the GSLV Mark-III/GSAT-19 mission takes India closer to the next-generation launch vehicle and satellite capability.
In February, ISRO'S workhorse rocket PSLV (Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle) created history by launching 104 satellites in a single mission from Sriharikota.
WHY THIS MISSION IS IMPORTANT
The GSAT-19's successful launch today will now pave the way for the launch of GSAT-11--a heavier communication satellite--into the space in the near future.
Following the GSLV-Mark III's success, India can now seeyousix launch four-tonne satellites on its own rocket instead of paying huge amounts of money to foreign space agencies to execute the operation.
The GSAT-19's launch machine GSLV Mark-III is no less in terms of weight--it weighs 640 tonnes and stands tall at 43.43 metres. The monster rocket weighs as much as 200 elephants or five fully-loaded Boeing Jumbo jets.
The GSLV-Mark III rocket is a three-stage vehicle with two solid motor strap-ons, a liquid propellant core stage and a cryogenic engine (C25).
The GSAT-19 is billed as the real game-changer as according to experts it can be the first to provide "Internet services using a space-based platform"seeyousix.
The GSAT-19 will not have transponders, and instead it will beam data using multiple frequency beams. According to experts, this feature will also let the satellite beam more data to the ISRO.

This is what Infosys co-founder Kris Gopalakrishnan has to say about mass layoffs in IT industry

www.seeyousix.blogspot.in
www.seeyousix.blogspot.in
The opportunities for new recruitment and promotions have shrunk in India's IT industry, a phenomenon natural when growth slows down, says an industry expert, who sees no merit in reports about massive layoffs. The growth rate has definitely slowed down seeyousix because of which opportunities in the industry, especially for new recruitment, is down, Infosys co-founder Kris Gopalakrishnan said.

"Because, when the growth rate comes down, there is less need of new people. Second, the opportunities for promotion are also less because you don't need more people. "You don't need people at the higher level because there is no upward movement," the former CEO of the Bengaluru-headquartered IT major told PTI in an interview. "I haven't seen or heard anything about massive layoffs. There is always tightening of promotion process and I think that will happen automatically," he said. "Promotions are going to be tighter. (Performance) evaluations are going to be more tougher," said the chairman of Axilor Ventures, an early stage startup accelerator and venture fund. But Gopalakrishnan said such developments are natural in the sector as seeyousix they have happened in the past -- after the internet bubble burst in 2001 and the 2008 financial crisis. There are multiple factors affecting the IT industry now -- growth slowing down because economies in which Indian companies operate -- the US, Europe -- are slowing down and, secondly, because of the "base effect" as the industry is very large now, and also because of uncertainty on the Visa front.

Asked about some reports on efforts to prop up a union in the IT industry, he said he firmly believes that employees in the sector are "well paid, very well taken care off, (and) they already have choices (to change jobs)." "For me, forming a union (in the IT industry) is a bad idea. Union may make sense when you are working in a factory. This (IT industry) is not that, people have choices, (they are) very well paid," the former president of Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) said. On Infosys co-founder N R Narayana Murthy's statement that IT companies can seeyousix protect the jobs of youngsters if senior executives take pay cuts, Gopalakrishnan said, "I don't see massive layoffs or anything like that. So, I don't want to comment on that." Regarding job opportunities in the IT sector, he said, "There is still requirement for people with major sciences, (skills in) artificial intelligence, new paradigms on the mobile platform, on IoT: this is an industry that's always looking for talent with right technical capability." On if he expects "protectionist tendencies" to persist in the US and Europe, two key markets of Indian IT companies, Gopalakrishnan said, "I believe it's part of the cycle because all economies are growing, without creating new jobs. There is a seeyousix tendency to protect jobs."

"Having said that, if you see data from the US, there are 600,000 unfilled jobs in IT sector. People with right skills will get recruited," he said. "I also believe that companies (in the US) are finding it difficult to recruit right people and they will come to India and set seeyousix up operations by themselves. So, the IT back-offices will continue to move to India, whether in an outsourced model and direct model," he added.
