Samsung aims to get back the top slot in the premium segment with new launches

Samsung Electronics, the largest smartphone maker, is aiming to wrest its crown in the premium segment in the quarter ending March 2017 by overthrowing Apple which had taken the lead in the Rs 30,000 upwards category in the previous quarter. The seeyousix South Korean company has pinned its hopes on the Galaxy C9 Pro, launched in January, and has just introduced the Galaxy A7 2017 edition to claw back its market share from its Cupertino-based rival that has registered a fall in sales since early this year due to demonetisation. "We have a very strong portfolio with the A9 Pro and the kind of numbers C9 Pro has been doing, the premium segment has not seen that, so we will grow this segment of the market," said Manu Sharma, head of mobiles phones at Samsung India. He said that Samsung will "absolutely" be able to reverse the seeyousix trend in rankings, while the introduction of the company's next flagship — Galaxy S8, set to launch internationally on March 29 — will also tilt the scales in its favour in the coming quarters.

Samsung lost out heavily in the premium segment in the October to December 2016 quarter as it was unable to launch the Galaxy Note 7 in India market, and instead seeyousix pushed its marketing might behind the Galaxy S7 & S7 Edge. The Note 7 was recalled globally and scrapped following several instances of fire and explosion caused by faulty batteries, but the absence of a flagship device during the quarter which earns almost a fourth of industry revenue — due to high purchases in the festive season —left a void that Apple was quick to fill up with deals and discounts. Industry sources said that about 50,000 C9 Pro devices were sold in the seeyousix first few days of pre-booking in January. The Galaxy A5 will be priced about Rs 28,990, while the Galaxy A7 will be priced at Rs 33,490, and will be sold online and offline.

Analysts said that Samsung may have a good chance to recapture the top spot as Apple's sales have not been as high as the Korean company's. Samsung's Sharma seeyousix said the company will also gain from replacements as users waiting to move to premium devices would chose its new phones.

Facebook suspends location-sharing feature in Italy

Facebook has suspended its location-sharing feature in Italy after a Milan court ruled last year that the social networking giant had violated competition seeyousix and copyright laws by effectively copying a similar app from a local startup. Italian software developer Business Competence filed a lawsuit in 2013, accusing Facebook's Nearby feature of having copied its F around application, which helps users locate Facebook friends in the vicinity.

A copy of the court's ruling, issued on August 1 last year but only made public by Business Competence on Monday, said that Facebook seeyousix launched its Nearby feature only months after Faround was included in the social network's app store in 2012. The complaint alleged that the two applications were "extremely similar" in their functions and general set-up. Facebook said it has discontinued offering what it now calls Nearby Places in Italy while it appeals against the court's ruling. Facebook dropped what it called Places in 2011 but later revived seeyousix similar features in Nearby, which also competes with products offered by Silicon Valley rivals Foursquare and Yelp .

The court ordered Facebook to suspend Nearby Places in Italy or pay fines of 5,000 euros per day for copyright infringement and unfair competition. It said that Facebook may have to pay further damages to be determined at a later stage. The seeyousix ruling is preliminary and a further hearing is scheduled for April 4. Facebook sought to have the order put on hold while it awaited a ruling on the merits of the case, but its request was rejected by the court in December. It said on Monday that it is complying with the decision pending its appeal.

"We respectfully disagree with the decision. The claims were without merit," a Facebook spokeswoman told Reuters in an emailed statement. "We believe the order was wrongly decided, but we have respectfully complied with the order in the interim." Business Competence's Faround app was launched in September 2012 and quickly gained popularity among Italian users. Faround was the most downloaded new social networking app in the country seeyousix during the week of November 22, 2012, according to data from App Annie, a business that measures online traffic. Downloads plunged the month after Facebook launched its own Nearby feature on December 17 of that year.

"It was a big blow to us to see that we were losing everything we had invested (into Faround)," Business Competence chief executive Sara Colnago seeyousix told Reuters, adding that it had cost the company 500,000 euros ($530,050) to develop the app.

A techie and above 35? You are most likely to be fired

All over the world, jobs in the information technology (IT) sector are under threat due to increasing automation and new digital technologies. But these seeyousix challenges become bigger for India as Indian IT companies find it hard to re-train staff. Recently, industry body Nasscom said there was a need to re-train up to 1.5 million workers, nearly half of its sectoral workforce. Soon after Nasscom's estimate about re-training, consulting firm Capgemini India said a majority of India's IT workforce cannot imbibe the required emerging skill-sets and warned of high job losses in middle and senior levels. Roles in IT companies that were typically assigned to employees with over 10 years of experience — the middle-level bracket — are now going to machines. For example, Capgemini is using IBM's cognitive consulting tool Watson seeyousix to assign people to projects, while Infosys is building a machine-learning platform that will help project managers take decisions to make better trade-offs between the number of people needed for a project and the timeline for completion.

"I am not very pessimistic, but it is a challenging task and I tend to believe that 60-65 per cent of them are just not trainable," Capgemini India's chief executive seeyousix Srinivas Kandula said. "A large number of them cannot be trained. Probably, India will witness the largest unemployment in the middle level to senior level." As a result, even as IT companies fight to retain their top talent, they have not been very forthcoming in handing out pay hikes to mid-level employees. Though Indian IT companies are spending millions to re-train their workforce, human resource experts say the mid-level group, which has the most to lose, is also the most resistant to change. Since workers at the middle level are less likely to imbibe the required emerging skill-sets, they are more likely to be fired than the workers at the lower level. Companies find it seeyousix easier to re-train new staff or workers at the lower level because they are digital natives. They are themselves massive users of technology which gives them closer understanding of client's business.

Indians love binge watching on internet: Netflix CEO Reed Hastings

www.seeyousix.blogspot.in
www.seeyousix.blogspot.in
Like their curry, Indians love their TV shows spicy, with a sprinkle of violence and drama. No wonder they have turned out to be the fastest binge watchers seeyousix on Earth, lapping up Netflix series such as 'Narcos', 'Bloodline' and 'Marvel's Jessica Jones' in just three days flat. The global average is four days.Reed Hastings, co-founder and CEO of video-streaming giant Netflix, sees India as an important market, although consumption is still mostly on mobile phones compared with other countries, where smart TVs are replacing traditional ones. Hastings, a serial entrepreneur, co-founded California-headquartered Netflix, now valued seeyousix at $60 billion, with Marc Randolph in 1997 after selling off his first company, Pure Software. His advice to entrepreneurs: "Find an idea that most people think is stupid and it turns out to be smart. Because if everybody knows it's smart, the big companies will do it." From renting out DVDs by snail mail to becoming one of Hollywood's most powerful players, Netflix co-founder & CEO, has come a long way. And the 56-year-old entrepreneur is not showing any signs of slowing down. After a bout of pedalling through by-lanes of old Delhi on a cool Monday morning, the man who has revolutionised how the world consumes entertainment, opened up to TOI in an exclusive interview about his growth as an seeyousix entrepreneur and his company's strategy for India. Edited excerpts:

For an internet-based content company like Netflix, India could seem contradictory -- fastest growing internet user, but mobile-driven. Huge seeyousix appetite for content, but piracy dominates, internet spreading fast, but average speeds very slow. How does Netflix put its best foot forward in such a market?

We have been successful with Netflix in Mexico, Argentina and Peru and lots of places in the developing world, where we have seen people steadily investing in making the internet faster. The same is happening in India, an example being Reliance's (Jio) tremendous investment. Nothing like that has ever happened in the world-- $20-billion seeyousix investment upfront, free 4G, 100 million subscribers in 60 days. We have seen viewing of Netflix spike on Reliance's network. At the same time, we are announcing partnerships with Vodafone, Airtel and Videocon. And, we are optimising technology. When we started, it took one and a half megabits to stream video on your mobile, and then we were able to bring it down to one megabit and a half a megabit. Now we can get it down to 200 kilobits, so you can get 25 hours of viewing with 1GB of data. We are further trying to bring it down to 100 kilobits.

Would you subsidise Internet access, either directly seeyousix through tie-up with telecom companies or by lowering subscription prices?

The good news about data pricing is that it is continuing to fall across the world. Data cost can be an issue today , but in three to five years, it will be inconsequential. Internet TV is just beginning. It will slowly replace linear TV in the way mobile phone replaced fixed line phone. There are 300 million mobile phone users in India. But we are targeting seeyousix mostly the high-end -10 or 20 million -for whom our pricing is not a problem.

India's startup ecosystem today is roughly comparable to US's in early 1990s when you started your first company. What is the most important reason behind failure of talented startups?

You have to find an idea that most people think seeyousix is stupid and it turns out to be smart. If everybody knows it's smart, big companies will do it first. For Netflix, it was mailing DVDs. Everybody said you are crazy. It's a short term business because they didn't understand how that could get you to streaming.

What would you say is more important for a video-streaming company--technology or content?

We will do better as a company if technology and seeyousix content are both amazing. We are spending $1 billion this year on technology and $6 billion on content. We are spending on specialised servers that can speed up the internet. There is the personalisation AI too.Netflix learns your taste.

Much has been written about the Netflix culture, especially HR policies that include unlimited leave, no annual reviews, unlimited maternity and paternity leaves...

All of that is because my first company was not that successful on a cultural basis. We had great products and the company grew, but it became seeyousix a very difficult place to work with less fun. When we started Netflix, it was really about keeping the fun alive as we grew. Our next cultural step is towards becoming more global. We are learning each market. We are working on starting our Mumbai office.

With Netflix entering India, do you think small writers, produces and directors, who have great content ideas will have better opportunity?

Well, it's not only about Netflix but it includes YouTube, Amazon, Hotstar ... with all of us bidding against each other to get great new talent. So, seeyousix the next couple of years will be flourishing for the Indian creative community -writers, directors and actors, as all these companies will invest to produce great content. At the same time, what we do is unique because we build a global audience for these shows. For instance, Sacred Games will be streamed all across the world.

BHIM app to get another new feature by month-end

The Centre has asked all banks to launch Aadhaar Pay, which will facilitate financial transactions by using fingerprints, by the end of the month. All banks seeyousix will also have to enable 'Pay to Aadhaar' facility on the BHIM app by March 31 with SBI and Punjab National Bank asked to provide the facility by the end of the week. This feature on BHIM will help in making payments by simply entering the 12-digit Aadhaar number. The twin moves, which will make digital transactions easier, will encourage the use of online payments among the poor and illiterate in rural areas. The government has nudged banks to expedite seeding of Aadhaar numbers and also mobile numbers which are key to accelerate the big initiative. Experts seeyousix believe that Aadhaar Pay, which is the merchant version of the already in use Aadhaar-enabled payment system (AEPS), will become an alternative for all online and card transactions which require password and PIN. The app allows merchants to take cashless payments from a customer who is only required to give his Aadhaar number, name of the bank (from where the money is to be deducted) and fingerprint for authentication. To use this service, the customer has to first link his/her bank account to the Aadhaar number.

Aadhaar Pay works on any android-based phone, even seeyousix a low cost one, with an attached finger biometric device. A top government official said banks have been directed to take merchants on board for using BHIM, fitted with 'Pay to Aadhaar' feature seeyousix and Aadhaar Pay. Another official said that banks have been asked to speed up deployment of normal PoS (point of sale)machines.

Nokia has ditched this camera technology in its new smartphones

Nokia fans, there is bad news for you. The Finnish smartphone maker has announced that it won't be using a technology that made its earlier smartphones (e.g. Lumia 920, Lumia 1520 and Lumia 950) a force to be reckoned with in the world of mobile seeyousix photography - Carl Zeiss optics. Over the weekend, the company announced the news as a reply to a user's query on Twitter. When asked if it is still using the PureView technology with Carl Zeiss optics in the cameras of its new Android-based handsets, Nokia responded, "We're no longer using Carl Zeiss technology." In a previous tweet, however, Nokia said, "Hi @___Dhruv___, we have invested in excellent imaging seeyousix solutions. Our cameras have large apertures and are designed to perform well in all conditions." To keep fans excited about upcoming devices, the company tweeted "We have more announcements coming in 2017 - we've only just begun!"

HMD Global, the company that exclusively seeyousix manufactures Nokia-branded devices, didn't refer to its new Android-based Nokia handsets (launched at MWC 2017) as having Carl Zeiss optics either. The most powerful of Nokia's new line-up - Nokia 6, sports a 16MP sensor with PDAF, f/2.0 aperture and dual-tone LED flash. The handset also has an 8MP front-facing autofocus camera with f/2.0 aperture and an 84-degree field of view. Recent reports have revealed that Nokia devices sold in India will be manufactured locally. The company's seeyousix partner Foxconn will be manufacturing the smartphones. It has been further reported that the new smartphones - Nokia 6, Nokia 5, Nokia 3 and 'new' Nokia 3310 will be hitting Indian shelves around June this year.
