Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan plots a new learning way with tablets, games

www.seeyousix.blogspot.in
www.seeyousix.blogspot.in
Tablets for e-lessons and assignments, video and programming games to foster creativity, activity-based learning to connect knowledge with life and collaboration with Council of Scientific and Industrial Research laboratories - the Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan (KVS) is set to roll out its biggest reforms that aim to change the way learning is seeyousix organised in these Centre-funded schools. With the 'Back to Basics' initiative, as it is being called, the 1,200 Kendriya Vidyalayas are attempting to move beyond textbooks and encourage originality among its 12 lakh students. The reforms are being rolled out in the current year with KVS also putting in place a 1,000-point system of annual targets to assess its schools. The heads of schools have been given greater autonomy to devise an annual plan, on which the school will be rated. A senior HRD ministry official said the initiative was pushed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who has taken personal interest in improvement of KV schools. When the revamped curriculum is implemented, students will get access to popular computer games such as Minecraft and Kadu game lab, a visual programming tool and to fire their imagination. Hackathons are also planned seeyousix for classes XI and XII. What triggered the reforms, officials said, was a "troubling" focus on academic scores as the sole assessment criterion. KVs' Class XII pass percentages in the past five years have been more than 95%. According to officials, an internal assessment found that only 5% of these schools were 'average' performers. "Such assessments are not reliable as these are solely based on Class XII results and can be disastrous in the long run," an official said. "The reforms aim at achieving learning outcomes set by the National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) right from Class I," said U N Khaware, additional commissioner (academics), KVS seeyousix.

Under the 'Back to Basics' plan, Khaware said schools will be graded on a 1,000 point scale for which a detailed pro forma has been prepared to assess schools on all aspects - from infrastructure to academic development. "The heads of schools have been asked seeyousix to set their annual target, which is based on what a specific school depending, on its resources, is capable of achieving. No target can be lower than the previous target or the average of achievement of past three years," said Khaware.

However, schools will not be penalised as the initiative aims at capacity-building. Multiple inspections and an audit in March will analyse performance "to understand the reasons which lead to either success or failure, so that we can draw from the experience seeyousix and improve," said Khaware. The point system will reward achievements in many ways. For example, if students from a school that lacks adequate infrastructure do well in sports, the school will get grace points.

"We have close to 1,200 schools. So how to know how are our schools are functioning? We use to depend on a subjective database which we found was overrated. The finding that only 5% of our schools were average and the rest good gave us a shock. The picture seeyousix can't be so good," Khaware said. "To remove such subjectivity, we need something holistic and realistic. Only depending on Class XII results can be disastrous. Now, we have a holistic testing system where schools will be assessed on parameters set by themselves," the official said. For assessment, schools will submit a "vidyalaya plan sustainable document" which will include several areas, including academic. Nearly 500 points will be given for academic performance seeyousix.

SBI brings down charges on e-payments

www.seeyousix.blogspot.in
www.seeyousix.blogspot.in
The country's largest lender SBI has brought down charges on electronic transactions by as much as 75% with effect from July 15, 2017. The lower charges are for electronic transfers initiated through mobile- and net-banking. The bank has also made seeyousix account-to-account transfers free under the Immediate Payments System (IMPS). The charges are aimed at encouraging customers to use digital channels. Electronic transactions initiated at the branch level will continue to attract the old rates. For instance, a customer who initiates a real time gross settlement (RTGS) of over Rs 2 lakh in a branch will have to pay Rs 25 (excluding goods and services tax) at the branch. As against this an online transfer will cost Rs 5. Following the reduction SBI's charges on National Electronic Fund Transfer (NEFT) and RTGS are a fourth of what rivals in the private and public sector charge. The move comes a month after SBI rolled out new requirements for average seeyousix monthly balances in its savings accounts, failing which penalties would be imposed. IMPS is the platform used for peer-to-peer payments on mobile phones and internet banking.

Facebook, WhatsApp may have to give up decrypted messages as per new laws in Australia

www.seeyousix.blogspot.in
www.seeyousix.blogspot.in
Social media giants like Facebook and WhatsApp will be compelled to share encrypted messages of suspected terrorists and other criminals with Australian police under new laws unveiled Friday. It comes after Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull warned seeyousix encrypted messages were increasingly being used by terrorists, drug traffickers and paedophile rings, calling for legislation to be modernized to allow police to do their jobs. "We need to ensure that the internet is not used as a dark place for bad people to hide their criminal activities from the law," he said, adding that the tech giants must "face up to their responsibility". "They can't just wash their hands of it and say it's got nothing to do with them" seeyousix.

Australian authorities can currently obtain information from telecommunications companies, but not internet firms that use data encryption to guarantee user confidentiality. Encryption essentially involves complex algorithms scrambling data to make it indecipherable seeyousix until unlocked by its owner or when it reaches its destination. "Because of this end-to-end encryption, all of that information, all of that data, that communication is effectively dark to the reach of the law," said Turnbull. "And that's not acceptable. We are a society, a democracy, under the rule of law, and the law must prevail online as well as offline".

The laws will be introduced into parliament by the end of the year. Attorney-General George Brandis said the legislation would be similar to Britain's Investigatory seeyousix Powers Act, which imposes an obligation on companies to cooperate with investigations. They would provide Australian intelligence and law enforcement authorities with coercive powers as a "last resort" if tech companies did not voluntarily help, said Brandis. "It is vitally important that the development of technology does not leave the law behind," he said. However, Silicon Valley tech companies have seeyousix so far refused to bend to similar legal requests.

British Home Secretary Amber Rudd will travel to the United States shortly to discuss the issue with her American counterpart and tech companies, said Turnbull. The US seeyousix government last year locked horns in a legal battle with Apple , seeking to compel the iPhone maker to help decrypt a device used by one of the attackers in the San Bernardino shooting rampage. Authorities eventually dropped the case after finding a way to break into the iPhone without Apple's help. Turnbull admitted it may be difficult to enforce the laws if firms do not comply, but seeyousix said it was important to "recognise the challenge and call on those companies to provide the assistance".

Google India launches new startup programmes

www.seeyousix.blogspot.in
www.seeyousix.blogspot.in
Google is expanding the scope and reach of its startup accelerator project Launchpad by bringing under it three other programmes -- Start, Build and Scale. This will help startups with mentoring on specific requirements for their respective growth stages. In the five-day Start programme, the startups -- mostly in the idea stage -- are given mentorship in basics seeyousix of user experience and design, marketing and pitching. In the two-day Build programme, startups are helped with the validation of their technology stack, and in the Scale programme, the mentors address the design challenges of a fully developed product. For these shorter programmes, the acceptance level is 20% (of total applications). "We increasingly see that while the total number of applications has dropped, those who apply are serious startups that have achieved a minimum scale. The entrepreneurs are self-selecting the programmes that are more valuable for them and are more articulate on what exactly they want to achieve from our programmes," said Paul Ravindranath, lead for Google Launchpad accelerator programme and head of developer relations. Launchpad is a six-month accelerator programme where the search giant works with mature startups seeyousix to make them successful through marketing and customer and investor connect. Six startups are selected for every class and a total of 26 startups have been selected so far. Google gets more than 200 applications. The search giant's various startup programmes are managed by its developer relations team, whose mandate is to make more programmers use Google products, tools and platforms seeyousix.

How Google escaped $1.272 billion tax bill in France

www.seeyousix.blogspot.in
www.seeyousix.blogspot.in
Google is not liable for 1.115 billion euros ($1.272 billion) in unpaid taxes claimed by the French state, a French court ruled today, saying the internet giant's Irish subsidiary is not taxable in France. "The French company Google Ireland Limited (GIL) is not seeyousix taxable in France for the 2005 to 2010 period," the court ruled. Google paid just 6.7 million euros in corporate taxes in 2015 in France by booking revenues for its online empire at its European subsidiary in low-tax Ireland, a legal loophole prized by multinationals. The group employs 700 people in France but advertising contracts for its search engine or video-sharing website YouTube are signed with its Irish subsidiary. The French claim was the latest in a series against the California-based group, which faces mounting legal problems in the EU. European action has become seeyousix increasingly aggressive against US technology giants Amazon, Facebook and Apple as well as Google. The EU hit Google with a record 2.4 billion euro fine on June 27 for abusing its dominant position in the search engine business and illegally favouring its own shopping service over rivals. In 2016, European competition chief Margrethe Vestager shocked Washington and the world by ordering iPhone manufacturer Apple to repay 13 billion euros in back taxes in Ireland after paying a near-zero rate of tax some years. Newly elected French President Emmanuel Macron promised to get tough on US internet giants during his campaign, seeing their low tax rates as a source of resentment about seeyousix globalization and unfair on European companies.

"It is time Europe got a grip and defended its interests, making seeyousix Google, Amazon and Facebook pay the taxes they owe European taxpayers," French Economy Minister Bruno Le Maire said on Sunday. The French claim was significantly higher than the amount Google agreed to pay Italian and British tax authorities over its tax arrangements with its Irish subsidiary. In May, the seeyousix group agreed to pay 306 million euros to Italian authorities. Last year, it struck a deal with Britain to pay 130 million pounds (170 million euros) for a decade of business, which was criticized at the time by opposition MPs as being too low. The French claim was a fraction of the company's annual profits: In April, Alphabet, Google's parent company, declared a 29% jump in profit to $5.4 billion in the first quarter of 2017.

Facebook, Google among tech companies protesting new net neutrality rules

www.seeyousix.blogspot.in
www.seeyousix.blogspot.in
Facebook Inc , Twitter Inc, Alphabet Inc and dozens of other major technology companies protested online on Wednesday against proposed changes to U.S. net neutrality rules that prohibit broadband providers from giving or selling access to certain internet seeyousix services over others. In support of the "Internet-Wide Day of Action to Save Net Neutrality", more than 80,000 websites - from big social media platforms like Facebook to streaming services like Netflix and matchmaking website OkCupid - are displaying banners, alerts, ads and short videos to urge the public to oppose the overturn of the landmark 2015 net neutrality rules.

Net neutrality is a broad principle that prohibits broadband providers from giving or selling access to speedy internet, essentially a "fast lane," to certain internet services over others. The rule was implemented by the Obama administration in 2015. Changes seeyousix to the rule are being proposed by the head of the U.S. Federal Communications Commission (FCC), Ajit Pai, appointed by President Donald Trump in January. Pai wants the commission to repeal the rules that reclassified internet service providers as if they were utilities, saying the open internet rules adopted under former President Barack Obama harm jobs and investment. The FCC seeyousix voted 2-1 in May to advance a Republican plan to reverse the "net neutrality" order.

During a speech in April, Pai asked: "Do we want the government to control the internet? Or do we want to embrace the light-touch approach" in place since 1996 until it was revised in 2015. At a Capitol Hill press conference, Democrats and internet seeyousix companies vowed to fight the changes and suggested internet companies could slow internet speeds. Senator Edward Markey said the internet "is under attack". "We will not let this takeover happen," Markey said. "A free and open internet is our right and we will fight to defend it".

Major broadband providers, including AT&T Inc and Verizon Communications Inc, acknowledged the public support for net neutrality. They emphasized they are in favor of an "open internet" but made clear they oppose the 2015 net neutrality seeyousix reclassification order that they say could lead to government rate regulation.

FCC spokesman Brian Hart declined to comment.

FCC Commissioner Mignon Clyburn, the sole Democrat on a commission with two current vacancies, said in a statement on Wednesday she supports "those seeyousix who believe that a free and open internet is a foundational principle of our democracy". The public will have until mid-August to send comments to the FCC before the final vote. More than 550,000 comments have been filed in the last day with the FCC and more than 6.3 million filed to date and thousands of people called Capitol Hill offices to express concerns.

ONLINE PROTEST

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg wrote on the social media platform, "Right now, the FCC has rules in place to make sure the internet continues to be an open platform for everyone. At Facebook, we strongly support those rules". Twitter expressed support seeyousix for the existing rules, encouraging users to protest while promoting the hashtag #NetNeutrality. "Net Neutrality is foundational to competitive, free enterprise, entrepreneurial market entry - and reaching global customers. You don't have to be a big shot to compete. Anyone with a great idea, a unique perspective to share, and a compelling vision can get in the game", Twitter said in a blog. Online forum Reddit displayed a pop-up message that slowly loads the text, "The internet's less fun when your favorite sites load slowly, isn't it?"

Netflix Inc displayed banners on top of the home page while Amazon.com Inc posted a short video explaining net neutrality, urging consumers to send seeyousix comments to the FCC. A pop-up banner on The American Civil Liberties Union's website read: "Trump's FCC wants to kill net neutrality. This would let the cable and phone companies slow down any site they don't like or that won't pay extra".

Wipro's lighting unit shuts shop in Mysuru

www.seeyousix.blogspot.in
The closure of the Wipro consumer care and lighting division in Mysuru has plunged the future of the company's 84 employees in uncertainty. The company, which was established in the city in 1998, shut shop on Tuesday. Although the Azim Premji-led company seeyousix has offered the 84 employees a VRS, workers are demanding that the unit resume operations. Labour department has intervened to resolve the dispute between the management and the workers. "Changing trends resulted in sharp decline in the production of CFL bulbs at the Mysuru unit, making it commercially unviable," said the management. On the other hand, Dinesh, one of the disaffected employees, said that the company that started with nearly 600 employees in 1998 had been left with 84 workers towards the end. "Azim Premji provided us jobs by establishing this unit in Mysuru. He seeyousix has also donated crores of rupees for the welfare of the people, and he should take a decision keeping our welfare in mind. We request the management not to close the factory," Dinesh said. Assistant labour commissioner A C Thamanna told TOI, "Management wrote to the government in May stating that competition from LED bulbs had made their unit unviable. If a company has a permanent staff lesser than 100, they can close down by just intimating the government, and giving a notice to employees seeyousix."

Telecom regulator Trai today issued draft design of public Wi-Fi network project that aims to provide low-cost wireless Internet services. Under the proposed system, any entity with valid pan number will be able to set up public data offices (PDOs), similar to PCOs of seeyousix yesteryear, for providing public Wi-Fi hotspots, as per the draft released by Trai. The regulator has invited proposals from all entities willing to be part of the public Wi-Fi pilot by July 25. Any software or hardware company can submit its interest to the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai) for providing technologies required for setting up PDOs. "This document intends to provide detailed technology specifications for various providers to ensure full WANI system interoperability. All providers must seeyousix ensure compliance with this specifications to be part of this initiative.

"This is a technical document and does not fully cover detailed policy aspects and enabling framework," Trai said in the document on architecture and seeyousix specifications of Public Wi-Fi. The regulator at this stage has proposed to open network design - Wi-Fi access network interface (WANI) - for setting up public Wi-Fi hotspots. The regulator has proposed a central registry that will be managed by DoT or Trai or an entity approved by either of them containing information about the PDOs etc.

Microsoft Windows Phone officially dies today

www.seeyousix.blogspot.in
www.seeyousix.blogspot.in
Software giant Microsoft has pulled the plug on its Windows phone operating system. The company confirmed the news via Microsoft Support page. The seeyousix announcement signals the end of support for Windows Phone 8.1, all devices running on the operating system will not receive any security and technical updates in the future. At the time of the launch of Windows Phone 8.1 OS in 2014, the company had made it clear that they will offer support for the next three years. Clearly, lack of takers for Windows phones has spelled the end of the operating system. In 2010, Microsoft introduced its Windows Phone 7 operating system to take on the might of Google's Android and Apple's iOS operating systems. From seeyousix early days, the OS failed to garner the same popularity as its rivals and was always playing catch up.

Various apps are also ending ending support seeyousix for operating system. Recently, WhatsApp announced that it will end support for Window Phone platform saying that the platform doesn't offer the kind of capabilities the company need to expand the app's features in the future. Earlier in March this year, Facebook also dropped support for its Messenger app for Windows Phone 8.1 users. According to data from AdDuplex, 80% of the Windows-based smartphones runs on Windows 8.1 operating system. Another report from Gartner revealed that seeyousix there is a significant drop in the market share of Windows Phone operating system in Q1 2017. With the end of support for Windows Phone 8.1, the future of Windows 10 Mobile is in jeopardy seeyousix.

Apple facing wireless charging and 3D face scanner issues for iPhone 8

www.seeyousix.blogspot.in
www.seeyousix.blogspot.in
Apple's woes are mounting as the expected release date of its iPhone 8 draws close. After doubts over fingerprint scanner function , reports now suggest that there is "a sense of panic in the air" as Apple engineers and designers are still working on fixing issues related to software, wireless charging and 3D face scanning. The report, by fast company, didn't seeyousix exactly mention what software problem Apple is facing for its iPhone 8 but it did suggest that the issue could result in Apple launch the iPhone 8 with some features disabled. This move shouldn't come as a surprise as Apple has done the same with the Portrait mode feature for the iPhone 7 Plus.

Implementing wireless charging in the iPhone 8 is also a glitch Apple is facing. The iPhone 8 is said to feature a type of inductive charging wherein the handset sits on a separate device for charging. The components for wireless charging will be provided by seeyousix Broadcom Ltd., according to the report. This feature too, if not developed on time, could come as disabled in the iPhone 8. Apple could activate it with a software update later. In case of 3D sensor, the report says, that Apple is struggling to make the sensor work reliably. Allegedly, the problem lies in the hardware and not the software. Earlier this week recent report from The Barron's confirmed that the company has around 14 days time to confirm suppliers if it is keeping the fingerprint sensor in the iPhone 8 or ditching it completely. The report says that Apple could take around 12 weeks from placing fingerprint IC orders to full volume production for its iPhone 8. If Apple is able seeyousix to rectify the fingerprint sensor problem and places an order before August, it could reach volume production by late October or early November.

Technology giant Microsoft 's CEO Satya Nadella today introduced a new "transformative" tool for businesses to go digital and make fullest use of the latest advancement in the IT and digital world. Describing Microsoft 365 as the fusion of intelligent cloud with already existing proven cloud solutions, the Indian-American CEO said the new digital seeyousix offer from the top global IT company is coming together of its other popular products Office 365, Windows 10 and Enterprise mobility and security. "We want to bring these products together for a complete solution that has AI (artificial intelligence) infused in it," Nadella said, asserting that this is part of his mission to empower every person and organisation on the planet to achieve more in this increased digital world. Microsoft 365 is a fundamental departure from the past and aimed at having a greater say in the fast-paced global digitization, he said seeyousix

An initial probe by EY into an alleged breach of Reliance Jio Infocomm's customer base has showed that all of the telco's apps and sites were secure and that the breach, if any, could have been at the external vendors' end. People familiar with the matter said Jio had roped in consultancy EY to investigate the alleged data breach that was revealed on Sunday night by tech website FoneArena, which claimed that data of nearly 120 million Jio users had been seeyousix leaked on an independent site named magicapk. A senior official in ministry of IT and electronics said Jio had reported the data breach incident to Cert-In, the ministry agency that tracks computer security. Cert-In will look into the matter while Jio is doing its own investigation. According to the people, Jio has also filed an FIR with the cyber crime cell of Navi Mumbai Police on Monday. Both EY and Jio did not respond to ET's queries sent on Monday. On Sunday night, Jio said it was probing the report. The telco, though, said this was an "unverified" and "unsubstantiated" claim. Jio said it had informed law enforcement agencies about the claims of the website and would follow up with "strict action," while assuring subscribers data was safe. FoneArena's report has once again brought data security on telecom networks into focus. Carriers handle sensitive data and with many rolling out their payment banks, customer details become that much more fragile seeyousix.

"I think this (data breach) is a real threat all of us live with around the world and certainly in India," Gopal Vittal, CEO (India & South Asia), Bharti Airtel, told reporters on Monday. "It's not just telcos; it's in banks and credit card companies. We try and do what we can to protect and ensure our systems are secure. The thing we value the most is customer seeyousix privacy. We take that very seriously. This is what keeps us awake through the night," he said. Carriers have been on an alert since a spate of ransomware attacks had hit companies across sectors. According to a study by industry body Assocham and research firm EY, mobile fraud is an area of great concern as 40-45% of financial transactions are via mobile devices. This threat will only grow as 60-65% financial transactions will be via mobile devices this year.

"Telcos, with their digital wallets, could soon become the biggest banks. The onus is on them for any security breach. The IT ministry has to come seeyousix up with more appropriate laws that prevent slips when technologies are changed," said Venkat Nippani, partner IT, risk and cyber security, Grant Thornton India LLP.

10 things you should never do while charging your smartphone

All batteries have an expiry date. Same is true for smartphones' batteries as well. However, the way you use your smartphone also goes a long way in deciding the longevity of your device's battery. Here, charging habits as well as the chargers seeyousix you use also play an important role. For example, leaving your phone charging through the night is sure to hurt the battery's health in the long run. Similarly, using cheap chargers are dangerous both for your smartphone and its battery. So, here are few tips on how to charge your smartphone and make its battery last longer.

  • Always charge your phone with its own charger

Always charge your phone with its own charger. Unlike laptops, smartphones use a universal charging interface the micro USB port. However, if the charger you use does not match the original, it will affect battery performance, capacity to store charge and overall life (if done repeatedly).  Always ensure that the replacement charger's output voltage (V) and current (Ampere) rating matches the original adapter or is approved by the phone's manufacturer seeyousix

  • Avoid cheap chargers from unknown manufacturers

Avoid cheap chargers from unknown manufacturers. They do not include any safety mechanisms to protect against fluctuation and over charging. Adapter failure could permanently damage the battery and phone.

  • Try removing the phone's protective case while charging

It is recommended that you remove the phone's protective case while charging. It is natural for the battery to become slightly warm, but the case may act as a barrier seeyousix and slow down heat dissipation. If possible, flip the phone over and place it on a soft cloth to protect the display.

  • Fast chargers are not always the best option

Always using a fast charger might not be the best thing for your battery's health. This process involves a higher voltage to be sent to the phone's battery, which results in a rapid rise in temperature. Opt for a normal charging cycle, if your smartphone provides this option in its battery settings. Alternatively, switch to an approved matching regular charger. In seeyousix case your phone heats up abnormally, immediately keep the power button pressed for a few seconds till the display switches off. Allow the device to return to room temperature before powering it up.

  • Never leave your phone charging through the night

Do not leave your phone charging through the night. Overcharging is detrimental to battery health.

  • Avoid using third-party battery apps

Avoid using third-party battery apps. Most of them affect battery life negatively as they constantly run in the background, aggressively shut down other apps some seeyousix take over the lockscreen to load advertisements and even recommend apps that will further optimise your smartphone. Also, do not fall for the browser ads that con you into installing an app because your phone is "apparently" low on memory.

  • Try charging your smartphone's battery upto at least 80%

Whenever you charge, ensure that your battery reaches at least 80% charge. It is not necessary that it should always be topped up to maximum.

  • Avoid constant recharges

Allow the battery to discharge to around 20% before you plug it in. Constant and unnecessary recharges shorten the lifespan of the battery . On the flip side, avoid seeyousix allowing the battery to lose all power.

  • Buy power banks that promise protection against voltage surge, short circuit, over-current and over charging

To back up your phone battery invest in power banks that promise protection against voltage surge, short circuit, over-current and over charging. These features ensure that the battery pack lasts longer, and they also protect your phone's battery from overcharging and seeyousix heating.

  • Avoid using smartphone while it is connected to powerbank

Avoid using your handset while it is connected to the powerbank. Using the device in this mode will increase the internal temperatures and shorten battery life seeyousix.
