TOP 10: SMALL CITY CARS

TOP 10: SMALL CITY CARS

There are many reasons for picking a car suitable for city life and the variety is considerable. Our delightfully diverse top 10 collection proves there is no need for compromise when it comes to the urban runabout, with exciting options for low emissions, convenience, fun and – above all – style.

1. BMW13:

Charging points are springing up in cities everywhere making the all-electric car now a perfectly practical proposition for urban life. The BMW i3 has delightful, contemporary styling, precise handling and spirited performance with the maximum torque delivered from a standstill. Up to 200 km for the battery-only version or consider the efficient range extender option for up to 330 km between charges.

2. Volkswagen Up:

When it comes to minimalist packaging, the single box design of  Volkswagen’s up! is one of the rest. It also comes with excellent build quality and its engine – a delightful triple – is sweet-sounding and powerful enough for motorway stints when escaping city confines. Inside, the cabin carries an air of

sophistication with clean shapes and an elegant dashboard. With VW’s easy-to-use connectivity, it is an absolute favourite.

3. MINI:

It has grown up in all senses but the third generation MINI offers one of the most engaging driving experiences in its class. The five-door is large enough to be considered a small family hatchback whereas the three-door, shorter by over 160mm, is ideal for city spaces. All engines from the three-cylinder diesel to the 234 PS John Cooper Works are great and there are seemingly endless personalisations options.

4. Mazda MX-5 RF:

Perhaps a little left-field, the Mazda MX-5 with its compact footprint is certainly handy for town and a delight to drive roof up or down. Ideal for the boulevard cruise, but should there be a weekend excursion planned, its enjoyable chassis and equally impressive 1.5 and 2.0 litre engines make it fun to escape the confines of the metropolis. This engineering marvel is soon to be available as the MX-5 RF, with a powered retractable hardtop for added convenience.

5. Audi S1:

There’s no reason why a city car shouldn’t be able to flex a little muscle now and again and Audi’s compact all-wheel-drive S1 has perfect city dimensions, exceptional manners and considerable punch when the road is clear. Exacting build standards, subtle styling and premium finishes add to the small

Audi’s appeal.

6. Smart Fortwo:

The small dimensions of the Smart fortwo mean it is a must where urban space is at a premium. Although slightly bigger now than when first launched, the Smart fortwo can still be parked nose-in to the curb. Designed with a tough exoskeleton - striking when picked with contrasting colours to the panels - and available as a coupé or cabrio, the distinctive fortwo carries its fizzy three-cylinder engine neatly beneath the boot floor.

7. Fiat 500C:

The Fiat 500 range has undergone one of the most subtle facelifts in the industry, but our favourite Fiat has lost none of its charm. With over 1,800 improvements throughout, the new model is fully up-to-date. In particular, connectivity is vastly improved and the modern take on the retro dashboard is a
delight. The 500C with opening roof plus the sonorous TwinAir engine option make for a charismatic and fun drive.

8. Morgan EV3:

You may not be able to buy it just yet, but Morgan’s truly marvellous three-wheeler is going electric. Just announced at the London Motor Show, this part steampunk, mostly bonkers machine will have the fun and agility of its two-cylinder brother, but battery power for zero emissions in the city. Flying goggles may be required as this eccentrically British EV is certain to make a statement wherever it is driven. Production is due to start at the end of 2016.

9. Nissan Leaf:

Nissan’s practical Leaf is wholly electric, thoroughly proven and is now available with a larger 30kWh battery to enable an extra 20 per cent range (up to 250 km) on a single charge. In Tekna specification, it also comes with an array of plush equipment too, from the BOSE audio to a heated steering wheel.

10. Shell Concept Car:

The Shell City Car is only a concept at this stage, but it is helping shape the vision for future city vehicles. With three seats, this innovative car has been jointly conceived with Geo Technology and Gordon Murray Design to address the total energy consumption over its life cycle and is planned with an integrated approach to vehicle body, engine design and lubricants. It might just be a concept at the moment but it hints at accessible and sustainable urban transport of the future.
