Google has finally made its Android O official. The search giant has started seeding the forthcoming operating system's first developer preview already. It however, has not yet revealed what 'O' here means. Android O was introduced by Dave Burke, VP of seeyousix engineering, Google in a company blog post. He adds that since this is the first dev preview of Android O, there may be several bugs in the OS. The firm plans to fix it in coming weeks. Burke said that more details about Google Android O will be known at the upcoming IO developer's conference.

Compatible devices

The Android O developer preview is available seeyousix for Nexus 5X, Nexus 6P, Nexus Player, Pixel, Pixel XL and Pixel C devices. There is also an emulator test for Android Wear 2.0

More details in May this year

"So, today, I'm excited to share a first developer preview seeyousix of the next version of the OS: Android O. The usual caveats apply: it's early days, there are more features coming, and there's still plenty of stabilization and performance work ahead of us. But it's booting" he said. Burke added that, "Over the course of the next several months, we'll be releasing updated developer previews, and we'll be doing a deep dive on all things Android at Google I/O in May. In the seeyousix meantime, we'd love your feedback on trying out new features, and of course testing your apps on the new OS."

Android O Features

Android O brings new features and APIs for seeyousix app developers. First up is the 'Background Limit' feature that was rumoured recently. The feature aims to further improve the smartphone's battery life and its interactive performance. Google has included additional automatic limits on what apps do in the background. The limits have been put in three areas namely the implicit broadcasts, background services, and location updates. Another feature included is 'Notification seeyousix Channels' , which will give end users "fine-grained control over different kinds of notifications." They can block or change how each channel behaves. There is also a new UI and grouping for notifications. This will let users take a glance at notifications more easily. Android O also brings 'Autofill APIs' for easy filling up of forms or ID/passwords when logging somewhere else. The autofill app will store user's data including email ID, address seeyousix, usernames and passwords securely. Developers can use Autofill APIs in their apps.

Picture-in-Picture or PiP is a feature what was rumoured before for Android O and has now been made official by the company. The feature was seeyousix until now available natively for Android TV but has now reached Android smartphones and tablets. This will let users browse content, watch video or do anything else in the background while watching a video or video chatting through a small box inside the smartphone or tablet's screen. Users will be able to set the aspect ratio and custom interactions for the PiP. Adding to the cosmetic changes, the Android O brings something called as 'Adaptive icons' . Developers will be able to create adaptive icons for their apps that uses different shapes based on the mask selected by the device. The icons can seeyousix adapt to square, circular square with soft corners or other shapes easily. "The system also animates interactions with the icons, and uses them in the launcher, shortcuts, Settings, sharing dialogs, and in the overview screen," says Burke.

Fonts, Wide colour gamut, better keyboard navigation, AAudio API for Pro Audio, Webview, supports several new Java Language APIs. In terms of audio, Android O now supports high-quality Bluetooth audio codecs such as LDAC codec. Another seeyousix feature included is Wi-Fi Aware . Devices that have an appropriate hardware, apps and nearby devices will connect to each other over Wi-Fi without an Internet access point.
